Spring Break in Detroit? Students Making a Change in the City
February 2, 2007
Remember your spring break? Did you go to Cancun? Can you even remember half of what you did? Thirty-five students from Wayne State will do something extraordinary this spring break. They will forgo all the college hot spots to participate in Wayne State’s Alternative Spring Break Detroit from March 11-16, 2007. The students will learn about issues affecting the city and then take the wisdom ‘to the street’, as they volunteer every day during the week-long project and give back to the community where they work, play and study.
This student-led initiative will start each morning with an educational component that will include diversity discussions, homelessness forums and tours of a detention facility. Then, the students will volunteer in the afternoon with nonprofits in Detroit where they will serve hundreds of meals to the homeless, help repair blighted communities and aid in restoring a Detroit treasure: the Jerome H. Remick Music Shell on Belle Isle.
The Alternative Spring Break Detroit program is sponsored by the Wayne State University Dean of Students Office and the Detroit Orientation Institute. For more information, contact Alexis D’Angelo: 313-610-3565 or alexisd@wayne.edu. You can also contact the Detroit Orientation Institute at 313-577-0171.
